Gentamicin sulfate is a water-soluble antibiotic originally purified from the fungus Micromonospora purpurea. Gen- tamicin acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome leading to inhibition protein synthesis and death in susceptible bacteria.
Gentamicin is effective against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and is used for the prevention of bacterial contamination in cell cultures.
Applications
- Broad range antibiotic effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Limited effectiveness against mycoplasma
- Suitable on primary cells
